Dog Trainer in Todmorden
Whether you’ve just brought home your first puppy or you’re living with a lively adolescent who’s forgotten everything they ever learned, good training makes life with a dog so much easier. I’m Jason, founder of Simply Dog Behaviour, and since 2010 I’ve been helping families in Todmorden and across the Calder Valley teach their dogs the everyday skills that matter — using kind, force-free, science-based training that dogs actually enjoy.
Training That Fits Real Todmorden Life
Teaching a dog to sit in a quiet kitchen is one thing. Getting the same response when you’re out and about is something else entirely. Todmorden is a town of steep streets, hillside walks and busy roads running along the valley floor, and a dog that pulls hard on the lead or won’t come back when called can make every walk hard work.
That’s why I train where you actually live and walk. We start with the basics at home, where your dog can concentrate, then gradually take those skills out into the real world. By the end, your dog isn’t just responding in the living room — they’re listening to you on the hills, on the pavements and in the park.
Using Centre Vale Park as a Training Ground
Centre Vale Park is one of the best places in the area to practise training with real distractions. Its open lawns and wide paths give you room to work on recall and loose-lead walking, while the steady flow of families, other dogs and people out enjoying the park gives your dog plenty of chances to practise staying calm and focused on you.
In a session we might use the park to work on a reliable recall with a long line, practise walking past other dogs without pulling, or teach your dog to settle on a bench while the world goes by. Each step is built gradually, so your dog succeeds more often than they fail — which is exactly how good habits stick.
Skills I Teach Todmorden Dogs and Owners
- Loose-lead walking — no more being dragged up and down the hills
- A reliable recall you can trust in open spaces
- Sit, down, stay and wait at doors, kerbs and gates
- Settling calmly at home, in cafés and when visitors arrive
- Leave it and drop it for safety on walks
- Polite greetings instead of jumping up at people
- Puppy basics: toilet training, mouthing, chewing and confidence building
Puppies and Adolescent Dogs
The earlier you start, the easier training is. For puppies, I focus on positive socialisation, toilet training, handling and the foundations of good manners, so you set your puppy up to become a calm, confident adult. For adolescent dogs between around six and eighteen months — the age when many owners feel their training has gone out of the window — I’ll help you get back on track with clear, consistent routines that work.
How My Training Works
All of my training is reward-based and force-free. That means no shouting, no punishment, no dominance theory and no equipment designed to cause discomfort. Instead, we teach your dog what you’d like them to do and make it worth their while. It’s kinder, it builds a stronger bond between you and your dog, and the results last.
Sessions are one-to-one, at your home in Todmorden or out on your usual walks. If your dog’s problem is more about fear, anxiety or reactivity than manners, take a look at my dog behaviourist page for Todmorden. You can also read more about my one-to-one sessions and puppy training sessions.
