Dog Behaviourist in Todmorden

Todmorden is a lovely place to share your life with a dog. Tucked into the valley with hills rising on every side, a canal running through the middle of town and a busy market at its heart, there’s always somewhere new to walk. But if your dog struggles with other dogs, people or noise, that same mix of busy town and popular walking spots can make every outing feel stressful. I’m Jason, founder of Simply Dog Behaviour, and since 2010 I’ve been helping dog owners understand why their dog behaves the way it does — and change it using kind, force-free, science-based methods.

Centre Vale Park: Beautiful, Popular and Busy

Centre Vale Park is one of the most beautiful parks around, and it’s no surprise that so many Todmorden dog owners walk there every day. With open lawns, tree-lined paths, the river and plenty of space to explore, it’s a fantastic place for a confident, sociable dog.

Its popularity is also what can make it hard work for some dogs. Families, children playing, joggers, people on bikes and lots of other dogs — often off lead and keen to say hello — can be a lot for a nervous or reactive dog to cope with. Rather than avoiding the park altogether, we use it as a training ground. I’ll show you how to read your dog’s body language early, how to keep enough distance that your dog can still think, and how to build calmer responses step by step. Over time, Centre Vale Park can go from a place you dread to a walk you both enjoy.

Canal Towpaths, Market Days and Town Walks

Walks along the canal towpath are a Todmorden favourite, but narrow paths with water on one side and cyclists or other dogs coming the other way leave very little room to move aside. On market days the town centre gets busy, with crowded pavements, food smells and people stopping to fuss your dog, and the traffic through the valley can be unsettling for a noise-sensitive dog.

These everyday situations are exactly where I like to work. Together we’ll plan routes and timings that set your dog up to succeed, and I’ll teach you simple, practical skills you can use in the moment — so a walk along the towpath or through town doesn’t have to turn into a battle.

Common Problems I Help Todmorden Owners With

  • Lead reactivity — barking, lunging or pulling towards other dogs or people
  • Fear of traffic, bikes, fireworks or other sudden noises
  • Separation anxiety and problems when left home alone
  • Guarding food, toys or spaces in the home
  • Recall and staying focused on you in busy, open spaces
  • Over-excitement and jumping up at visitors
  • New puppies who need a good start with socialisation and life skills

How I Work

Every case starts with understanding the dog in front of me — their history, their body language, what triggers the behaviour and what’s keeping it going. From there we build a clear, step-by-step plan that fits your everyday life. Everything I teach is force-free: no punishment, no dominance theory and no equipment designed to cause discomfort, because those approaches damage trust and often make fear-based behaviour worse.

Sessions are one-to-one, either at your home in Todmorden or out on the walks where the problem actually happens. You can read more about my one-to-one behaviour sessions, or if you’ve got a young dog, take a look at my puppy training sessions. If you’re mainly after everyday manners like loose-lead walking and recall, see my dog trainer page for Todmorden.
